READ: Proverbs 12

“The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.” (Proverbs 12:15)

There is something we all need to know: We are very, very good at deceiving ourselves. The more we isolate ourselves, and the less that we allow others to speak into our lives, the easier it is for us to tell ourselves a story that is far from reality. This can happen in almost any area of life, any circumstance or situation.

And here’s the thing about our self-deception: We like being right in our own eyes. We would rather rest in the false narratives that we create for ourselves than face what is actually true. We would rather be self-deceived than admit that we may be wrong.

So, how do we combat our own self-deception? It’s pretty simple: We choose to be honest with ourselves, and we allow others to be honest with us. Because while we are foolish when we are right in our own eyes, we are wise when we listen to advice.

We can ask GOD in prayer to search our heart and find anything in us that is not pleasing to Him and lead us on His path of righteousness. Psalm 139:23-24. He will reveal where we are not honest or how we have made selfish choices or are deceptive or anything else. He will speak to us and show us His Will and Way. Listening to Him and obeying Him, we will choose to be “honest with ourselves and allow others to be honest with us.”
