READ: Proverbs 30
“Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.” (Proverbs 30:5)
Who do you know that you can describe with the statement Agur (this Proverb isn’t written by Solomon) describes God with in this verse? Every word of God proves true. You can test everything God has ever said, in the entire history of the world, and there would be no lies found. No half-truths. No unfulfilled promises. I’ve known a lot of amazing people, people I trust with my life, and yet, I don’t know anyone I can say that about. It’s a standard that is impossible for us to live up to as humans. We’ve all lied, or not told the whole truth. We’ve all failed to follow through on what we said we would do. But God hasn’t. It has been proved that all he’s ever said is true.
Which is why it is so imperative that we follow through on the rest of verse 5. Because this is true, God is a shield. Because everything about him is true, he is capable of protecting us. He is worth taking refuge in.
We take refuge in a lot of things-we place our faith in all kinds of people, ideas, and objects. And then we’re shocked when we get hurt, when we’re not protected, when the walls we’ve built don’t hold up. We shouldn’t be-we’re trying to take refuge in what is inconsistent. Ultimately, that’s what we are, in and of ourselves-inconsistent. We don’t always do the right things, say the right words, make the right decisions, or have the right attitudes.
But God does. He’s perfectly consistent. You never have to wonder how he’s going to respond, or how his feelings are going to work out. He is the same, all the time. He doesn’t change. Isn’t that refreshing, to know you can reside in a God who is consistent? In the midst of an ever-changing world, full of inconsistent people, and as you deal with your inconsistent self-doesn’t it bring you relief to take refuge in a King who is still and constant?
You can’t be protected from chaos by chaos. You need a shield that rises above the chaos-God is that shield. Take refuge in Him.
